Pre-Departure Planning

Pre-Trip Checklist

Visa & Entry
A $21 ESTA is required for Visa Waiver Program citizens, applied online at least 72 hours before departure. Non-waiver nationals must apply for a B1/B2 visitor visa, which often takes weeks to issue. Lodge the application early; processing queues lengthen near the tournament.
Stays of up to 180 days are visa-free for most nationalities. On arrival you're issued an FMM tourist permit, or you can apply for it online beforehand. For trips that mix Mexico and US matches, get entry permits for each country individually.
Visa-exempt nationals need an eTA ($7 CAD, applied online). Travelers whose passports require a full visa should file early. Processing is normally quick, though it can stretch during big events. eTAs are passport-linked and valid for a 5-year window.
Currency & Costs
Currency: US Dollar (USD). Credit and debit cards work almost everywhere. Tips are expected: plan on 18-20% in restaurants and $1-2 per drink at bars. Meal budgets: $15-25 at casual restaurants, $8-15 for fast food. Stadium food and drink pricing runs well above street prices.
Currency: Mexican Peso (MXN). USD is widely taken in tourist areas, but paying in pesos delivers better rates. 10-15% is the customary tip. You'll spend $5-10 per meal locally, making Mexico the cheapest of the host countries. ATMs are widely available.
Pay in CAD. Card payments work everywhere, contactless included. 15-20% is the standard restaurant tip. Expect US-like pricing: $15-25 per meal. Be aware that Canadian shelf prices are pre-tax, so the bill comes in 13-15% higher than the menu.
Weather (June-July)
Conditions swing widely by city. Southern host cities (Miami 32°C, Houston 35°C, Dallas 36°C) run hot and humid. The West Coast stays milder and drier: LA 25°C, San Francisco 18°C, Seattle 22°C. In the east (New York 29°C, Philadelphia 30°C, Boston 27°C), conditions are warm and humid. Sunscreen, a hat, and steady hydration are key for outdoor stadiums.
The wet season begins in June. Because Mexico City is at 2,200m, daytime tops out near 25°C and evenings cool down hard. Layers plus a rain jacket are recommended. Both Guadalajara and Monterrey are warmer (30-33°C) and more humid. Expect frequent — but short — afternoon thunderstorms.
The Canadian summer at its finest. Toronto runs about 26°C, with some humidity here and there. In Vancouver, expect 22°C, daylight stretching to 16 hours, and very little rain. Outdoor events feel comfortable in either city. Pack light layers for evening match times.
Practical Info
Power: Type A/B plugs, 120V. English is the dominant language. Uber and Lyft are available in every host city. Most hotels, cafes, and airports provide free WiFi. For mobile data, buy an eSIM or prepaid SIM at the airport. Transit varies sharply: New York is excellent; Dallas and Houston are limited.
Plugs are Type A/B at 127V (US-compatible). Spanish is the primary language though English is widely understood in tourist areas and near stadiums. Uber and DiDi run smoothly in all three host cities. Grab a Telcel or AT&T Mexico SIM at the airport — affordable data and calls.
A/B plugs, 120V — same as US. Toronto: English. Vancouver: English/French. Uber works in Toronto and Vancouver. Reliable transit: Toronto's TTC and Vancouver's SkyTrain both connect to their respective stadiums. Canadian carriers are expensive; consider an eSIM or prepaid plan as a visitor.

Frequently Asked Questions

When should I book World Cup 2026 flights from Sweden?

December 2025 through early March 2026 is the cleanest window for SEK-denominated transatlantic fares out of Arlanda. SAS and Norwegian release summer inventory in late autumn, and the lowest economy buckets sell out rapidly once Swedish Easter holidays pass. For group-stage matches (11 to 27 June) aim to lock fares by February; for knockout rounds (late June through the 19 July final) book by January, because that is when long-haul seats in the cheapest class routinely sell out on ARN-EWR and ARN-ORD.

Do Swedish citizens need a visa for the USA, Mexico or Canada?

No full visa — three different online authorisations. For the USA, apply for ESTA (USD 21, valid 2 years) at least 72 hours before travel at esta.cbp.dhs.gov. For Canada, apply for eTA (CAD 7, valid 5 years) at canada.ca. For Mexico, no pre-arrival authorisation is needed — you receive a tourist permit on arrival valid for up to 180 days. Watch out for copycat ESTA sites charging inflated fees; only the official .gov domain is legitimate.

Is it cheaper to fly from Arlanda or Gothenburg?

Arlanda almost always wins for direct transatlantic service — SAS nonstop to Newark, JFK, Chicago and Los Angeles is usually the cheapest option by the time you factor in a connection. From Gothenburg, a one-stop via Copenhagen (on SAS) or Amsterdam (on KLM) often costs similar to flying down to ARN first. For regional fans in Malmö, Copenhagen Kastrup (CPH) is a 35-minute Öresund train ride away and has deeper direct service to the USA than Gothenburg, so pricing CPH alongside ARN can save meaningful SEK.

What is the best way to hop between US host cities once I arrive?

Once you clear US immigration, domestic legs are cheap. Southwest, JetBlue, Delta and American all operate dense networks between the 11 US host cities, and one-way fares booked 4 to 6 weeks out typically sit under USD 150. For short hops between East Coast matches (New York, Philadelphia, Boston), Amtrak rail is often faster than flying once you factor in airport time. Renting a car in car-dependent cities like Dallas, Houston and Atlanta is strongly recommended — stadium parking and rideshare surge pricing on match day can get painful.

Can I use SAS EuroBonus points for World Cup flights?

Yes, and the Star Alliance network gives Swedish fans unusually strong redemption options. EuroBonus points transfer to SAS long-haul as well as United, Lufthansa, Air Canada and Turkish Airlines. For US venues, United award space from Arlanda and Copenhagen to Newark, Chicago and Los Angeles is typically best released 11 months out, then again at the two-week mark. Air Canada award seats to Toronto and Vancouver via Copenhagen or Frankfurt can undercut cash fares by 40% if you are flexible on dates. Avoid premium-cabin redemptions — they often cost double in points for only a marginal cash discount.

How should I handle Swedish krona against the US dollar during the tournament?

Flights purchased in SEK lock in at the moment of booking, so krona volatility does not affect your airfare post-booking. For on-the-ground costs however, match-day spending, hotels and rental cars are invoiced in USD, MXN or CAD. A multi-currency card from Revolut, Wise or a Swedish equivalent lets you hold dollars and pesos when the rate is favourable instead of paying whatever the krona is worth on kickoff morning. Avoid currency exchange at Arlanda and US airports — rates there are typically 4 to 7% worse than a mid-market transfer.

Do I need travel insurance on top of my Swedish Försäkringskassan coverage?

Yes, absolutely. Försäkringskassan does not cover medical costs outside the EU/EEA, and a single US emergency-room visit can exceed 500,000 SEK. Buy a travel medical policy with at least 10 million SEK in medical cover, plus trip cancellation and delay. Several Swedish banks (SEB, Swedbank, Nordea) bundle basic travel insurance into their premium cards, but read the exclusions — US coverage is sometimes capped or excluded entirely, and the policy limits may not be enough for serious American hospital bills.
